Think you are obsessed with your smart phone?
Wait until you hear how much it thinks about you!
Like any good motivational speaker, the Internet comes from humble beginnings. It comes from Arpanet, that's the first computer network. And originally there were just two computers connected to it. But it crashed the very first time they tried to send a one word message across. In fact, it crashed after they typed in three whole letters.
Flash forward about 50 years or so and now the average person is producing huge amounts of digital information through things like internet searches, online purchases, emails, social media. And all that information is being stored on server farms, which leads us to ask the question - why would anyone do that?
I mean, who really cares that I'm about to watch yet another cat video, or that I tweeted six times during last week's Game of Thrones?
Winter is coming.
Corporations and governments. That's who.
And big data is what makes it all possible.
Now, I know what you're thinking. Big data, that's a giant android who does not use contractions. No, we're actually talking about the huge amount of information generated by the Internet, and our ability to sift through it and make sense of it all.
Do you want to see big data in action? Well in 2000, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey was able to generate more information about our universe in a few weeks than we had accumulated in the history of astronomy!
And in 2008, Google was able to predict flu outbreaks by tracking searches for things like "flu symptoms" and "where to buy a thermometer."
And if you've ever bought anything online, you've probably also seen the "you may also be interested in..." message. That's not generated by some creepy guy sitting in a backroom watching your every move. Those are generated from algorithms that are based upon what you've liked, what you've bought, and how long you've looked at it.
And big data is about way more than just discounts.
From business to the environment to education, big data offers exciting possibilities. Even the boys in blue will benefit. Data scientists are working with police departments to develop crime prediction algorithms to prevent crimes like burglaries which, when they happen, tend to be followed by more burglaries soon afterward in the same area. The algorithm will pin point where and when more burglaries are likely to occur so cops can disrupt them before they even take place.
Big data could also help power companies and their customers conserve energy. For example it might send a message from a malfunctioning meter to the power company so it goes out and repairs it. Or maybe you get an app on your phone that tells you when you're wasting too much energy, like "you should really close that fridge door already."
Kids in school could benefit from big data which could track their grades to such a subtle degree, they could detect when a kid is having trouble before a teacher can even notice, letting the teacher step in and help the kid succeed.
Although big data is really exciting, I have to admit it's a little scary too. I mean, do we really want a judicial system that's based on computer algorithms? Where prosecutors and police look not for probable cause, but as one expert put it, for probabilistic cause. The cops could come in and bust you for a crime you would have committed. Ya'know, Minority Report style.
One estimate sets the amount of data that's just floating around out there by 2020, to be 100 zettabytes. Which is about 107 BILLION terabytes!

Application Programming Interface (API) is the Engine of Connectivity
APIs, or Application Programming Interfaces, are the engine behind the connectivity we rely on every day. They enable data to move between applications, devices, and systems so we can shop online, book travel, make reservations, or interact with digital services with just a few clicks.
What is an API?
At their core, APIs serve as messengers. They take a request from one system, communicate it to another system that can perform the action, and then return the response. While the technical definition involves routines, protocols, and tools, the practical idea is much simpler: APIs are the link that allows different technologies to communicate smoothly.
The Waiter Analogy
A familiar analogy helps bring this to life. An API works much like a waiter in a restaurant. You choose what you want from the menu, the waiter communicates your order to the kitchen, the kitchen prepares the food, and the waiter brings it back. The customer and the kitchen don’t interact directly—everything flows through the waiter. APIs play that same role between applications and systems.
A Real-World API Example
A real-world example is flight booking. When someone searches for flights, the request must reach airline systems to retrieve seat availability, prices, and options. Airline websites can access that data directly, but travel aggregator sites use APIs to request the information from airline systems and return it instantly to the user. That intermediary function is what enables different services to work together behind the scenes.
Ultimately, APIs create the connected experiences that make modern digital interactions possible. They allow applications, databases, and devices to work together, forming the backbone of how information moves across today’s technology landscape. And when building or managing these APIs, MuleSoft provides the tools to design them securely, efficiently, and at scale.

Hello and welcome to Acadgild’s tutorial on data science.
In this video, we explain the difference between three key concepts artificial intelligence vs machine learning vs deep learning – to understand how they relate to the field of data science.
First up, artificial intelligence or AI! What is it?
Artificial intelligence is simply any code, technique or algorithm that enables machines to mimic, develop and demonstrate human cognition or behavior.
We are in, what many refer to as, the era of “weak AI”. The technology is still in its infancy and is expected to make machines capable of doing anything and everything humans do, in the era of “strong AI”.
To transition from weak AI to strong AI, machines need to learn the ways of humans. The techniques and processes, which help machines in this endeavor are broadly categorized under machine learning.
Machines learn in predominantly two ways. Their learning is either supervised or unsupervised.
In supervised learning, machines learn to predict outcomes with help from data scientists.
In unsupervised learning, machines learn to predict outcomes on the go by recognizing patterns in input data.
When machines can draw meaningful inferences from large volumes of data sets, they demonstrate the ability to learn deeply.
Deep learning requires artificial neural networks (ANNs), which are like the biological neural networks in humans. These networks contain nodes in different layers that are connected and communicate with each other to make sense of voluminous input data.
Deep learning is a subset of machine learning, which in turn, is a subset of artificial intelligence.
The three technologies help scientists and analysts interpret tons of data and are hence crucial for the field of data science.

10 Tips for successful implementation
1. Define Your Desired Results
Kapil Mishra "One of the key risks that customers face in implementing ERP systems is not being able to make an impact on the business bottom line",
Steve Weaver "When you are purchasing a new ERP system you need to understand your business, what you do, what you want to achieve, what your processes are, not what you necessarily do today but also where you want to go to what you ultimately want to be and what ultimately want to achieve".
2. Don't Automatically Reuse Old Workflows
Steve Weaver "Many people will buy a new ERP system without understanding their business and what they are effectively doing is spending an awful lot of money to replace a like for like system.
3. Map All of Your Business Processes
Kapil Mishra "It boils down to building a solid business case right in the beginning being very clear as to what are the bottlenecks in the processes, what are the areas that are a challenge today and which specific areas of the business need to be impacted. This is really a blueprint that should be in place before you start thinking about the IT component of the ERP implementation."
Steve Weaver "They need to map their business processes, they need to get the business stakeholders, the end users into rooms to document what they do and as importantly question why they do things."
4. Ensure you have a long term plan for your solution
Chris Mean "The best customers that we work with are the ones that think ahead and plan ahead. And plan in optimization stages where together we can partner how to then drive their business forward after initial go live."
5. Make sure you have executive level sponsorship
Brian Blood "Constant involvement of senior executives during the project process helps to mitigate the risk of architecting processes in the overall solution that are counter intuitive to the company's overall strategy."
6. Assemble the right project team
Chris Braisby "One of the big problems that we often face on projects is that when we are assembling a project team and the customer is putting that project team together then they often put the team that is available, the people that they can most easily spare and not the key people, the key decision makers in the organisation who can understand all the issues, understand where their weaknesses are and also where their current strengths are."
7. Try to standardise and avoid developments
Chris Mean "A common reason why an ERP implementation project might fail is that too many developments are identified and approved by the customer. We work very strongly with our customer to try and minimise those developments and one of the techniques you can use is to ensure you have strong board sponsorship about the direction of the project and you have good buy in from the key users about adopting a new solution"
8. Make user training a priority
Steve Weaver "Training your core team and training the end users on the ultimate software you are going to use is a necessity. It is generally towards the end of a project and many businesses set a go live date and the part that gets crushed in the timescales is the training and the end user exposure to the system, so the more investment you can make time wise in training ultimately leads to a better go live.
9. Focus on getting the right data into the system
Martin Clothier "The key things for data migration are start early, there are no magic bullets, define the migration as a separate project and chose the right people in the business to own the data and test, test and test again as part of user acceptance testing and good data management doesn't stop after go live, it's an ongoing process that needs to be defined."
10. Select the right partner and solution
Chris Mean "Choosing the right solution and the right partner for the implementation is key. Often you see people choosing a solution based on cost or even the partner based on cost as well and I think it is important to think how does that solution fit what your business needs? How does it fit your business needs for the future? And how can you work with the partner you have selected.
